How’s your day been? The makings of a good day in retail

retail experts share their great retail experiences

Here at Goodays, we aim to create better days for everyone in commerce. So, to wrap up our series of reports from the Retail Technology Show, we couldn't resist asking our experts the million-dollar question...

When was the last time you had a really good retail experience?

From a simple, straightforward ‘in and out’ experience to spending a whole day shopping until they dropped, from the deeply personal power of local service to the tiny details that create a flawless brand experience, our commentators' thought-provoking answers remind us to celebrate everything that’s great about retail.

Multichannel and Omnichannel Retail Experiences

One thing that struck us was that our panel all highlighted bricks-and-mortar experiences when talking about their great day.

But that’s not to say the all-powerful presence of the omnichannel world was far from their thoughts, as Peter Cowgill, former Chair of JD Sports and Executive Chair of The Fragrance Shop, noted:

“I do think multi-channel is very important. But obviously, bricks and mortar have come back very strongly post-Covid to a far greater extent than we all imagined.”

Exceptional in-store experiences

Steve Collinge, MD of Inside Retail Group and Executive Editor of Inside DIY stated:

“I was in a big box DIY store yesterday, and they had so much stock of seasonal products. Everyone was waiting for the rain to stop and the sun to come out…the store was looking perfect; all the people's uniforms were smart and just waiting for those thousands of people to come in. Seeing that yesterday, for me, was one of the most exciting times of the year.”

Mary Portas highlights the importance of personalisation

Personalisation still remains the driving force for exceptional retail, according to Mary "Queen of Shops" Portas.

I opened the doors to my local bookshop and said, "Girls, I need three great titles... you know what I like." How good is that?!
